2020 Fiat 124 Spider

History/Overview

Since 2017, the Fiat 124's Italian name and styling have been mated to a platform engineered for the Mazda MX-5. It's one example of a spirit of corporate cooperation automakers are employing to reduce production costs, especially for low-volume vehicles like this good-looking roadster.

Available Trims

The 2020 Fiat 124 is unchanged from last year. Trim levels are Classica, Lusso and Abarth. All three use a 1.4L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that comes with a choice of six-speed automatic or manual transmissions.

Standard Features

Classica trim comes standard with a touring suspension, 16-inch wheels, power-folding side mirrors, soft convertible top, LED taillights, tilt steering, 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, six-way driver and four-way front passenger manual seats, movable cup holders, air conditioning, a four-speaker stereo, leather-trimmed steering wheel and push-button engine start.

Lusso adds 17-inch wheels, automatic on/off headlights, rain-sensing wipers, fog lights, passive keyless entry, leather upholstery and automatic dual-zone climate control.

Finally, Abarth trim is the performance-oriented version, with a sport suspension, front strut tower brace, sport drive mode selector, limited slip differential, sport front fascia, heated front seats with leather bolsters and microfibre inserts, a sport instrument cluster and bright pedals.

Key Options

Classica offers two technology packages that add features like passive keyless entry, headlight washers, dual-zone climate control, LED headlights and daytime running lights, and rear park assist.

Lusso can be had with a convenience group with auto-dimming mirrors and blind spot monitoring. There's also a navigation pacakge and a visbility group with adaptive LED headlights.

Abarth trim can be optioned with the same packages as Lusso, plus Brembo brakes and seats in full leather or with Alcantara inserts.

Fuel Economy

Fiat's fuel consumption estimates are 9.0/6.7 L/100 km (city/highway) with the manual transmission, and 9.3/6.5 with the automatic.

Competition

Fiat's most obvious competitor for the 124 is the Mazda MX-5 with which it shares its underpinnings. For more money, Audi has the four-seat A3 cabriolet. Beyond that, any roadster you'll find is significantly more expensive: the Nissan 370Z convertible, BMW Z4 and Porsche 718 Boxster are the best-known options.
